After Korea, Samsung Galaxy Watch Now Gets US FDA Approval for Sleep Apnea Feature

[ad_1]

Samsung has received FDA approval for integrating sleep apnea feature in the Samsung Galaxy Watch smartwatches. As you may have guessed, this feature will enable the watches to detect signs of sleep apnea when users sleep with the watch on, connected to a compatible Samsung phone.

But as the approval is from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it’s only for US users. Samsung has also got a similar approval for its Galaxy Watch in Korea, which allows the smartwatches in that specific region to offer the feature.

More About the Sleep Apnea Feature on Samsung Galaxy Watch in the US

Samsung is yet to announce which Galaxy Watch models will get the feature in the US. However, after Korean approval, the feature was brought to the Galaxy Watch5 and Watch6 series in that region. So, it’s possible that these two lineups will also be the only ones in the US to get the feature.

Sleep Apnea on Galaxy Watch

As for the feature itself, it can detect signs of severe to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. But note that it requires a two-night monitoring period. So, to use the feature, you need to track your sleep at least twice for more than four hours. Your Galaxy Watch should also gather these two data within a ten-day period.

Another thing to note is that the sleep apnea feature of the Samsung Galaxy Watch requires you to be over 22 years old. If you don’t know what sleep apnea is, it is a common sleep condition that’s chronic.

The condition can go untreated and undiagnosed for years. It is the main reason behind daytime fatigue for most, as it lowers sleep quality. The condition can also increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. So, the fact that the recent Samsung Galaxy Watch devices can detect it is good news for the users. Expect the feature to land anywhere between July and September of this year.
